Colon cancer is the fourth most common cancer diagnosed in the U.S. Current treatment has limited success if the cancer has penetrated the bowel wall. As primary care doctors, naturopathic physicians can play an important role in prevention of this disease as well as the early diagnosis at a stage where it is easily curable with surgery. This presentation will include a basic review of the pathology, screening and diagnosis in a primary care setting as well as naturopathic supportive therapy for patients while they undergo conventional therapy. This will include a review of the treatments available and the natural remedies to improve their effectiveness. The final portion of the discussion will cover the secondary prevention of recurrent cancer after successful treatment of a primary occurrence.
