We will see how, by fusing Chinese theory with outlooks from Western psychology, we can transcend our Western practice of isolating physiology from psychology. Thus we can begin to know together the fracture that splits body from mind. Chinese medicine sees people as miniatures of a cosmos composed of elemental power: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each person embodies all of these but can be typified by one. How we think, feel, behave, our ailments, aptitudes and sufferings exist within the self-organizing context of our type. We will focus on herbal prescribing based on this model by reviewing the body constituents of Qi, Moisture, Blood, Shen, Essence; the adverse climates of Cold, Heat, Wind, Phlegm and Damp-Heat; and the Organ Networks of the Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung and Kidney in terms of appropriate therapeutic strategies. Participants will receive a new outlook on Chinese herbal use.
