While the loss of wild medicinal plans is vitally important, we must not forget about the accelerating loss of traditional knowledge of how to use medicinal plants. Can traditional herbal knowledge be preserved and transmitted adequately in the face of rapid change in cultural values? What, if anything, can be done to create a sustainable, self-preserving knowledge system? Can modern scientific and didactic systems help? And can trade structures such as the Nagoya Protocol help?
