Babies born either prematurely, or at term but small for gestational age (SGA), are at risk for a multitude of illnesses in childhood and beyond. Exposure to toxicants and poor nutrition are two factors contributing to premature birth and SGA. Genetics are a third factor in the equation. We will explore how to use nutrition to diminish the negative aspects of single nucleotide polymorphisms and toxicant exposure on gestational age and size.
