Prenatal and moderate postpartum depression plague as many as 10% or more of pregnant women. Untreated, these conditions can have an adverse impact on the maternal-child dyad, on maternal well-being and on the long and short term development and health of the baby. While pharmaceuticals may help a small percentage of women, many receive no benefit. Additionally, these medications may have substantial side effects and adverse effects, including preterm labor, fetal cardiac defects, and more. This class will review the etiologies of pregnancy and postpartum depression, screening, conventional treatment, and evidence based botanical, lifestyle, and supplement therapies to safely and effectively prevent and treat
these conditions which can dramatically and deleteriously impact what could otherwise be a joyous time in a woman?s life.
