Breastfeeding throughout the first year of life and beyond offers considerable health and psychological benefits to both mother and child. Physicians should therefore have the knowledge to promote, protect and support the breastfeeding relationship. However, lack of sufficient education and preparation for breastfeeding support by physicians has been well documented in the medical literature. Significant pain while nursing may suggest feeding problems that not only affect a child?s weight gain, but lead many mothers to abandon breastfeeding altogether and may increase risk for postpartum depression. This presentation will discuss evaluation, integrative management and referral guidelines for the multiple causes of painful breastfeeding.
