Adjuvant therapy using combination medications is a common practice that helps reduce the dosage of lipidlowering pharmaceuticals or augment their lipidlowering effects. Plant sterols are nonpharmaceutical agents with known LDLcholesterol (LDLC) lowering properties that can be used as an alternative or in conjunction with other lipidlowering medications. This presentation will discuss the mechanisms of action, application and clinical efficacy of plant sterols/stanols on LDLC lowering. In addition, research on the efficacy of plant sterols/stanols compared with pharmaceutical agents and in combination with other nutraceutical therapies, such as omega3 fatty acids will be examined.
