Dr. Head presents evidence of efficacy for several nutrients and botanicals which have a long history of use in the control of blood sugar. While many of these fell by the wayside with the advent of pharmaceuticals, there is considerable evidence that they may be effective adjuncts or substitutes for oral and/or insulin therapy in Type 2 Diabetes. There are also specific nutrients and botanicals which have been studied for the prevention and treatment of neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy and cardiovascular complications. The research on nutrients such as lipoic acid for neuropathy and botanicals such as bilberry for retinopathy are discussed as are some clinical experiences.
