Jane Hawley-Stevens presents the science, philosophy and folklore of gardening by the moon's phases. The first quarter begins when the Sun and Moon seem to be in the same place, or conjunct. (The new Moon). The second quarter begins halfway between the New Moon and the Full Moon. This half moon rises around noon and sets around midnight. It is seen in the western sky before midnight. The third quarter begins with the full moon, when the sun and moon are opposite, with the earth in the middle. The round moon rises in the east at sunset, rising a bit later each evening. The fourth quarter begins halfway between the full moon and the new moon. This decreasing moon rises at midnight, appearing overhead as the sun rises.
