Tongue diagnosis has long been an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The healthy tongue has balanced mobile (Yang) and moist (Yin) qualities. A healthy tongue should also have enough Blood to give the tongue a pink hue that varies with the species and age of the patient. Pattern differentiation (Bian Zheng) based upon these tongue qualities can lead to rational treatment strategies and improved clinical outcomes. In this intensive, we will review these tongue qualities from photos of canine, feline and equine patients. Some general acupuncture and herbal treatment examples will be presented to treat animals with characteristic tongue quality changes reflecting different disease patterns.
