The genus Salvia (plants commonly known as sages) contains many ethnobotanically significant species. With about 500 species, subgenus Calosphace is the largest group of sages in the Western Hemisphere. This talk will describe the major medicinal species of North and South America and their usage by indigenous cultures. Emphasis will be placed on traditional medicinal uses, folk taxonomy, and contemporary, corroborative

pharmacological research.
