DESCRIPTION: Vitamin D is typically associated with chronic health conditions, but new evidence suggests that it may have an important role in acute illness. Several factors, such as uncertainty over apparent vs. true deficiency, appropriate choice of biomarkers, and the effect of inflammation on circulating micronutrients, makes it difficult to manage these patients during and immediately after critical illness. This interactive presentation highlights these challenges and address evidence based management strategies.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Understand how vitamin D is obtained ? is there a benefit of one vs. the other?

2. Understand the epidemiology of vitamin D deficiency in the United States

3. Understand the role of vitamin D in the preservation of healthy immune function

4. Understand what happens to vitamin D during acute inflammatory states

5. Understand the challenges of managing vitamin D deficiency in acutely ill patients
