DESCRIPTION: Primary Care physicians encounter thyroid disease frequently, but many are not familiar with causes and treatment approaches for autoimmune thyroid disease. In this talk, Dr. Friedman will review deficiencies and excesses which can contribute to hypothyroidism as well as treatment considerations and lifestyle measures. This class offers suggestions that doctors can consider when treating symptomatic thyroid patients with Fibromyalgia and Heart Disease.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Provide participants with an overview of thyroid autoimmune disease;

2. Inform participants as to research indicating environmental and genetic influence of the disease etiology;

3. Identify nutrients, botanicals and pharmaceutical interventions that are evidence-based.

4. What are the nutrients that affect thyroid function?

5. What environmental exposures have been linked to autoimmune disease?

6. What nutrients and herbs have shown some evidence to influence thyroid function positively or negatively?

7. There are many environmental influences on peripheral thyroid function such as Iodine, heavy metals, soy, and rosmarinic acid that can alter thyroid function. Soy, Rosmarinic Acid, heavy metals can decrease thyroid function. Evidence shows that the use of triiodothyronine along with T4 can decrease depression in hypothyroid patients.

8. Many physicians are not aware of the effects of certain substances on thyroid fucntion. This seminar will bring physicians up to date with environmental influences on thyroid function, and provide a case in which to apply this knowledge.
