DESCRIPTION: This lecture will help participants gain an appreciation for how gluten sensitivity can contribute to autoimmune thyroid problems. Many physicians encounter patients with symptoms due to autoimmune thyroid disease but they are often unaware of factors to consider that might be contributing to the problem and that can be easily addressed. In this lecture, Dr. Baucom will discuss some factors that may help doctors better serve some of their patients.
OBJECTIVES:
1. History and physiology of Gluten/Celiac spectrum. Assessment of clinical manifestations
2. Participants will receive a review of thyroid gland physiology.
3. "Leaky gut syndrome" will be discussed and participants will be invited to consider how gluten sensitivity might contribute to leaky gut as well as autoimmune thyroid disease
4. Participants will be given diagnostic work up and evidence-based treatment considerations
5. Participants will gain a better understanding of the role of gluten sensitivity and celiac disease in autoimmune disease
6.The lab and stool approach to diagnosis will be contrasted with endoscopy and biopsy findings
