Presented annually to an individual who has significantly contributed in an outstanding distinguished manner to the progress and advancement of enology and viticulture or the Society itself. The Merit Award acknowledges excellence in the field of education, technology, research, management, public relations or any discipline related to enology and viticulture. During a distinguished career with the University of California, Mr. Jensen was instrumental in shaping the future of California viticulture. As both a farm advisor and viticulture specialist, he worked to develop commercial products such as plant growth regulators and to obtain commercial registration for some of the key chemicals used in viticulture. Jensen?s applied research programs in grape production, including work on disease control, cultivar selection and vine spacing, are well-known for their impact on California?s grape industry. The results of his research programs have been shared with grape growers and others in the industry through the development and organization of statewide viticulture short courses and meetings, including the San Joaquin Valley Grape Symposium, the Kearney Agricultural Center Grape Day and UC Extension short courses on wine grape and table grape production. He has long been

recognized as an authority on table grape production and celebrated as a pioneer in grape integrated pest management. In honoring Frederick

Jensen with the 2001 Merit Award, the ASEV will pay tribute to his work and applaud his many achievements.
